Common method books are part of the effort to reduce unwanted variation in healthcare services. The goal is to achieve consistent practices across hospitals and health regions, reduce variation, and streamline the work with procedures. This contributes to quality improvement in healthcare and frees up resources for healthcare personnel.

The portal is owned by the four regional health enterprises in Norway and is managed by SKDE. An interregional management body for metodebok.no was established in 2023. This body collects national and regional method books and establishes local versions as needed. Each method book is developed by a professional group, with an editor responsible for the professional content, monitoring quality requirements, and implementing necessary updates.

As of August 2024, there are over 65 method books in the online portal, covering two-thirds of the medical fields. Ten new method books are currently under development.

Metodebok.no has around 15,000 searches daily and nearly five million annually.
