Patients with coronavirus infection in hospital are recorded in the Norwegian Intensive Care Register.
The Norwegian Intensive Register has quickly developed a solution for registering patients with coronavirus infection who are admitted to intensive care units. From Wednesday, 11th March, patients in intensive care with suspected or confirmed illness from the virus will be registered.

In collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Health Mid-Norway IT (HEMIT), Norwegian Health Network, the Centre for Clinical Documentation and Evaluation (SKDE), and Health North ICT, the Norwegian Intensive Register has developed a solution for the registration of patients with SARS-CoV-2 (which causes the disease Covid-19) in the register. This solution will form the basis for reports to the FHI, which will be used for monitoring the disease in Norway.
- It is therefore very important that the registration is quick and accurate. We have emphasised that the registration should be simple and not time-consuming, says Eirik Alnes Buanes, head of the Norwegian Intensive Register.
### Separate Form for Patients with Infection
As soon as a patient with suspected or confirmed infection with SARS-CoV-2 is admitted to intensive care, a separate form for the patient should be created in the Norwegian Intensive Register. This should include the time of admission, diagnosis category, time of initiation of mechanical respiratory support and ECMO treatment where applicable, as well as risk factors. Patients who have already been admitted previously should also be registered.
- Furthermore, it is important to update when changes occur. This allows us to maintain an ongoing overview of how many ventilators and how many ECMO machines are in use for this patient group at any given time, and ensure accurate numbers of how many patients with confirmed disease are in intensive care, explains Buanes.
### Pleased to Establish Registration
Buanes is pleased that the Norwegian Intensive Register has managed to establish a solution for monitoring the disease in a short time.
- I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to making this happen so quickly! This means we can start receiving registrations from intensive care units right at the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak in Norway. It will be significant for tracking the spread of the disease, but it will also be important for reviewing the material afterwards, so we can better understand how the disease manifests, he says.
The Norwegian Intensive Register will follow up on all registrations to ensure they are correct, while also inquiring if there are other admitted Covid-19 patients in hospitals to ensure that all patients are registered.
