SKDE had submitted two applications for research funding to Helse Nord and received approval for both. In total, this amounts to 8.8 million kroner, which will be disbursed over 3 to 6 years.

The funds will go towards a postdoctoral fellowship for Elin M. Gustavsen at SKDE. She will research follow-up and rehabilitation after acute strokes.

SKDE is also receiving funding for a PhD scholarship linked to the research project “What determines whether and where a patient should undergo spinal surgery, and what does the choice mean for the patient?” The scholarship holder is Oliver Müller, who works as an orthopaedic surgeon at Nordlandssykehuset. His supervisor is Cato Kjærvik, who is affiliated with SKDE as a researcher.

Will Provide New Knowledge

— We are absolutely delighted! We received approval for both of our applications. Our postdoctoral project will provide new knowledge about the benefits of various forms of rehabilitation after strokes, a topic we currently know far too little about, says the director of SKDE, Eva Stensland.

— We have a very good project group in place with extensive knowledge, and we look forward to starting the work, she continues.

Section leader Beate Hauglann in the research section is also pleased: — The spinal surgery project will map what influences the choice of treatment location for spinal surgery and the significance of waiting times. There is also an AI sub-project related to decision support that will be exciting to work on.

Continuing Funding

In total, Helse Nord has allocated just over 119 million kroner to various research projects for 2025. Of this, 30 million kroner is for new projects.

SKDE is also continuing funding for two other ongoing projects. These include Ina Heiberg's research scholarship, which compares cancer treatment in patients with and without severe mental illness. Additionally, there is funding for the final phase of Bård Uleberg's PhD on acute treatment of heart attacks as part of the KlinReg project “Equitable healthcare – no matter where you live?”
