Significant variation in the treatment of obesity patients

The treatment of patients with obesity varies, and it is not the areas with the highest prevalence of obesity patients that have the highest consumption of healthcare services. This is shown by the new Health Atlas on obesity.

The Health Atlas shows that each year from 2018 to 2022, an average of 52,415 patients with obesity were in contact with health services.

There is also considerable variation in the type of treatment provided for obesity. In certain areas, for example, surgical treatment is used more frequently than in others.

Obesity is a chronic disease, and follow-up from the healthcare system should occur regularly and over a long period. A new Health Atlas for obesity has examined the use of specialist healthcare services by patients with obesity; including surgery, lifestyle treatment in rehabilitation institutions and outpatient clinics, as well as patients' contact with general practitioners.

The analyses show significant geographical variations in the use of healthcare services for the period 2018—2022.

The Health Atlas has been prepared by Helse Førde, and you can read more about the findings in their news article.
